Field studies in low- or middle-income countries (LMICs) often rely on local researchers to collect data, but these contributors are rarely listed as authors when the results are reported. This unethical practice deprives them of credit and undermines their employment prospects. We suggest ways to help make authorship more inclusive (see L. Horn et al. Nature 615, 790–793; 2023).
